The recent security incident got us all worried, but is it time to put the curtain down on this crowd’s favorite app? Let’s find out.

LastPass Users: How Many People Use LastPass in 2024?

LastPass

Over 33 million people–that is how many people use LastPass today.

Founded in 2008, the Boston, Massachusetts-based enterprise recorded impressive user growth in its past 14 years in the market.

Ten years after its founding in 2018, LastPass reported having 16.8 million users subscribed to its free and paid membership tiers.

This is at a time when password managers have just started gaining market attention.

Today, lastpass.com records between 11 million to 13 million monthly visits, and ranks #66 among all Computer, Electronics, and Technology websites in the United States.

LastPass 2022 Security Incident

On August 25, CEO Karim Tuobba released a notice informing all customers about a recent security incident they detected two weeks before releasing a statement.

The breach is said to have compromised the platform’s source code which immediately caused a stir among its customers.

For the record, many users use LastPass for their most private transactions as the platform use encryption technology.

Users’ passwords are remembered in undecipherable texts that cannot be understood to protect their data in case a hacking incident happens.

Are LastPass Users’ Data Compromised?

In the notice, Tuobba opened an FAQ section that answers its users’ most pressing questions.

LastPass claims that users’ master passwords, password vaults, and personal information are not compromised.

The business leverages a Zero Knowledge technical implementation that makes sure only the user has access to his/her decrypt password vault data.

This means it’s time to calm your jitters as there is no need for you to change your LastPass credentials or exit the app for good.

Yes, you can let out that sigh of relief now.

65% of  US Internet Users Are Critical of Password Managers

Despite no personal information being compromised, the recent security breach on LastPass is expected to bring some reckoning on the reliability of online password managers again.

A recent survey from passwordmanager.com and public opinion data authority, YouGov, shows that 65% of all internet users in the United States are second-guessing the reliability and trustworthiness of password managers.

Moreover, 50% of all survey participants are adamant about not using password managers at present and in the future.
