Facebook is undoubtedly one of the most successful social media platforms of all time.

The platform was launched in early 2004 and quickly found success.

It branched out from its original market to offer connectivity across the planet.

In many ways, Facebook represents the start of social media’s popularity.

Facebook allowed users to share their daily lives and use them to inspire others.

Facebook isn’t the top site for social media influencers, but it can be argued it was the catalyst that made it all possible.

Impressively, despite having been in existence for over 20 years, Facebook remains the leading social media platform/ Of course, it has faced challenges along the way.

Other social media sites, such as Twitter, (now known as X), have tried to steal the crown.

So far, the competition has been unsuccessful, although they do attract millions of users themselves.

However, as the following TikTok vs Facebook user statistics will show, TikTok has proved to be a very popular site.

Despite being created in 2016, and being significantly younger than Facebook, TikTok has seen rapid growth in user numbers, illustrating its potential to be the biggest social media platform on the planet.

To fully understand the rivalry between these two social media giants we’re going to need to take a closer look at what they both have to offer.

Is TikTok really a young person-only social media platform or can it appeal to a wider audience?

The following statistics show that its appeal is growing and it may just have the potential to upset Facebook in the future.

Key Statistics

  • Facebook has 3 billion active users
  • TikTok has 834 million users
  • 25% of Tiktok users are under 20 years old
  • Facebook is most popular in India
  • 43.2% of Facebook users are female
  • Singapore has seen significant growth in time spent on TikTok each month
  • The average Facebook user is 32 years old
  • 52.83% of TikTok creators are aged 18-24
  • 98.5% of Facebook users access via a mobile device
  • Globally 4.9 billion people use social media
  • 53% of all social media site visits in the us are to Facebook
  • TikTok revenue totaled $350 million in the fourth quarter of 2022
  • TikTok users, on average, spend 19.6 hours on the app every month

Top TikTok Vs Facebook User Statistics in 2024

1. Facebook Has 3 Billion Active Users

Facebook User

As of April 2023, Facebook is said to have 2.989 billion monthly active users.

In other words, almost 3 billion people are using Facebook every month.

A staggering 68% of those users log into Facebook every day, meaning over 2 billion people are using Facebook daily.

China and India have the largest populations on the planet.

Together their populations total 2.85 billion! Despite that huge number, it’s still not as high as the number of Facebook users.

In fact, Facebook users account for 37.2% of all the people alive in the world today.

This figure can be further refined.

Facebook is only available to people over the age of 13 and you can’t get Facebook in China.

If we remove people on Earth under the age of 13 and anyone living in China, then 59.1% of the Earth’s remaining population is on Facebook!

It’s hard to deny its popularity!

2. TikTok Has 834 Million Users

TikTok hasn’t been in existence for as long as Facebook.

While Facebook is over 20 years old, TikTok is just 8 years old.

However, despite its young age, TikTok has managed to build an active monthly user list of 834 million.

This is less than a third of the number of Facebook users.

However, considering the rapid growth that TikTok has seen so far, and its popularity among younger people, it is likely only a matter of time before TikTok has a similar number of users to Facebook.

Of course, having said that Facebook is dynamic and constantly evolving, which means it’s impossible to foresee exactly how this battle will end.

You should note that while TikTok user numbers can’t rival the number of people in China and India, it is nearly three times the population of the US and approximately 12 times the population of the UK.

3. 25% Of TikTok Users Are Under 20 Years Old

TikTok User

TikTok is seen as the social media platform for the younger generation.

When you look at the stats, this appears to be true.

The latest research shows one in four TikTok users is less than 20 years old.

The research shows that 25% of TikTok users are aged between 10 and 19.

If you extend the age bracket to thirty and include everyone below that age, then 47.% of TikTok users are considered young as they are younger than thirty.

Here’s the latest data to reinforce this point.

25% of TikTok users are aged between 10-19 years old.

A further 22.4% are aged between 20-29 years old.

The percentages start to drop as the age goes up.

People aged between 30-39 portray 21.7% of TikTok users, 20.3% are between 40-49, and just 11% are aged over 50.

It’s worth noting that Generation Z appears to prefer TikTok.

There are 37.3 million Gen Z’s on TikTok compared to just 33.3 million on Instagram.

The latest study by Pew Research shows that just 32% of Facebook users are Generation Z.

That means around a billion people.

However, the percentage of younger people has dropped significantly since 2015 when it was thought to be 71% of Generation Z.

4. Facebook Is Most Popular In India

There are 1.4 billion people living in India, making it the second most populated country in the world.

Only China, with 1.42 billion people has more inhabitants.

Of all those inhabiting India, it’s estimated that 369.9 million actively use Facebook every month.

That’s significantly more than the estimated 186.4 million American Facebook users.

Of course, it should be noted that that number represents just over half the US population.

370 million Indian Facebook users represent approximately one-quarter of India’s population.

Other countries with a significant Facebook following include Indonesia with 135.1 active users, Brazil with 114.2 million, and Mexico with 93.3 million Facebook users.

Even the Philippines manages 91.9 million and Vietnam has 75.6 million.

Other countries are lagging a little behind; Bangladesh has 54.2 million, Thailand has just 51.6 million, and Egypt has 47 million.

It has a significant following in some of the most easily influenced countries in the world.

In contrast, TikTok has less of a global reach.

According to the latest statistics, it is most popular in the US, with 122.1 million active users.

That’s not that far behind Facebook! However, TikTok is less popular elsewhere.

For example, there are just 99.8 million followers in Indonesia and 83.3 million in Brazil.

Surprisingly, Mexico is popular with TikTok users, there are 62.8 million living in Mexico and 55.1 million living in Russia.

Vietnam plays host to 44.8 million more, and there are 38.9 million in Pakistan.

That leaves 38.4 million in the Philippines, and 36.5 million in Thailand, with just 32.2 million, in Turkey

5. 43.2% Of Facebook Users Are Female

Facebook User

If you’re using Facebook as a marketing tool or even to attract a partner, you’ll want to know the percentage of men and women.

It will help you assess its usefulness and how you should target your campaigns.

According to the latest reports, 43.2% of Facebook users around the planet are female.

The other 56.8% are considered male.

A fact that isn’t always appreciated in the Western World is that not everyone on the planet has excellent internet connections.

The result is some people can’t access the web or have limited access.

According to the latest info, men in less-developed countries are more likely to have internet access than women. This reflects the fact that many countries don’t yet have equal rights for women.

Of course, this does skew the result slightly, increasing the percentage of male Facebook subscribers.

Interestingly, the opposite is true for TikTok.

Recent studies found that 57% of TikTok users are female.

This could be a reflection of which markets have adopted TikTok. There are significantly more US members than any other country.

You should note that TikTok continues this trend with creators.

According to the latest research, 53.79% of creators are female, compared to 46.21% being male.

6. Singapore Has Seen Significant Growth In Time Spent On TikTok Each Month

A good sign that a social media platform is increasing in popularity is when the amount of time spent on the app by the average user increases.

The greater the increase the more popular the app is becoming.

According to the latest research, Singapore has seen the most significant growth year-on-year.

In the last year alone, the amount of time spent on TikTok by the average user has grown by 74%.

Indonesia got a close second place with a 67% increase in time spent on TikTok.

Russia followed this, the only other country with over a 50% increase rate.

The global average is listed as 48%, several countries come close.

For example, Brazil saw a 44% increase in time spent on TikTok, and Australia saw a 40% increase.

Mexico took the 6th spot, tying with the UK at 37%.

Turkey saw an increase of 35%, Canada managed 32%, and Argentina completed the top ten with 29%.

7. The Average Facebook User Is 32 Years Old

Facebook User

TikTok appears to attract a younger audience and has a slightly higher percentage of female users.

However, these figures can be skewed by the fact Facebook expects users to be over 13, the same rule doesn’t apply on TikTok.

That almost makes it inevitable that the youngest social platform users will choose TikTok and stay with it throughout their teenage years.

According to the latest research, the average age of a Facebook user is 32.

The demographic is quite interesting and questions whether TikTok really is the preferred platform for the youngest generation.

Studies show that the average age of TikTok users is 24, not substantially different.

The study showed that Facebook has 109.4 million users aged between 13 and 17.

That’s nearly 5% of Facebook’s audience.

It also has 508.2 million users aged between 18-24, and a further 668.5 million between 25-34.

In percentage terms, that means 57.1% of Facebook users are aged between 13 and 34.

Despite reports of mass exoduses from Facebook, these reports suggest that it’s still very popular with the younger generations.

8. 52.83% Of TikTok Creators Are Aged 18-24

TikTok may attract a young audience but it’s interesting to note that the majority of creators on TikTok are aged between 18-24.

Over half the content on TikTok is created by this age group.

In contrast, just 8.7% of content is created by those under 13, and 18.67% by people aged 13-17.

TikTok may attract the younger crowd but it appears most of them prefer to look at other people’s content instead of posting their own.

The survey showed that 15.03% of the content is created by 25-34-year-olds, and just 2.75% by those aged between 35-44.

The older generations have no interest in creating on TikTok.

People aged 45-54 make up just 1.65% of the content, and those over 55 contribute 0.36% of the content.

By comparison, 35% of the content on Facebook is created by people aged 30-40 years.

While this is still the younger generation, it illustrates the different markets these two social media platforms cater for.

9. 98.5% Of Facebook Users Access Via A Mobile Device

Facebook User

The latest surveys show that almost every Facebook user has accessed their Facebook account via a mobile device at least once a month.

This statistic reflects how much better the mobile phones of today are compared to 5 years ago.

With more processing power it’s easier to get online anywhere, and much more convenient.

The mobile revolution is confirmed by several other statistics.

Firstly, just 16.7% of Facebook users access their account via a desktop at least once a month.

A staggering 81.8% of Facebook users only ever access the platform via a mobile, while just 1.5% of Facebook users only access the platform via a laptop or desktop.

The percentage left, 16.7%, are the ones that access Facebook on a mobile and a laptop/desktop.

Interestingly, the stats are too different for TikTok.

According to surveys, 90% of TikTok users only ever access TikTok via the app on their mobile device.

Less than one percent of users only ever use a desktop or laptop, and the remaining use both.

10. Globally 4.9 Billion People Use Social Media

There are roughly 8 billion people living on the planet and nearly 5 billion of them are using social media!

That’s particularly impressive as a 2023 survey estimated that 5.3 billion people have access to the internet.

That means, nearly everyone online is on social media.

These figures illustrate that while Facebook has a huge following, over half the people on social media, its dominance isn’t guaranteed.

There are roughly 2 billion internet users not on Facebook but using other social media, such as TikTok.

It should be noted that the average social media user is active on six or seven platforms every month.

In the US this figure is 7.1 social media accounts, the average person in India has 11.5 accounts, while the Japanese have an average of 3.8 accounts.

In short, while TikTok may currently only have a third of the number of visitors, this could easily change.

It may just be a matter of time before Facebook is dethroned.

11. 53% Of All Social Media Site Visits In The US Are To Facebook

Facebook User

Facebook has approximately three times the number of users as TokTok, but only 500,000 more than YouTube.

However, regardless of user numbers, the latest research by Forbes found that over half of all social media site visits in the US were to Facebook.

That means, despite there being at least five other social media platforms with over a billion users, between them they attract fewer visits than the mighty Facebook.

That’s valuable information if you’re trying to start a brand or want to promote an existing one, you need to target Facebook.

Don’t forget, Millennials use Facebook and they are currently the largest generation on the planet.

12. TikTok Revenue Totaled $350 Million In The Fourth Quarter Of 2022

If you need any other confirmation that TokTok is an up-and-coming force, then consider this.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, TikTok earned $350 million in revenue.

In the same quarter, Facebook earned $32.2 million.

TikTok’s revenue for Q4 2022 was $200 million more than the same quarter in 2020.

More impressively, its Q4 2022 earnings were more than Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and even Snapchat earned combined during the same period.

In short, TikTok has huge potential.

Of course, it is worth noting that Facebook’s revenue for 2022 totaled $116.8 billion.

In contrast, TikTok’s revenue for the year is set to be $9.4 billion.

There’s still a long way to go.

13. TikTok Users, On Average, Spend 19.6 Hours On The App Every Month

TikTok User

Most people agree that social media is addictive.

In a recent survey over 10% of people admitted to being addicted to social media.

Of course, it can be a tool for good, providing information and helping people connect.

Social media use has also been linked with an increased risk of depression, making its usage something that everyone should be concerned about.

The truth is, that usage is increasing.

Facebook users spend an average of 19.6 hours a month on the platform.

In 2022, TikTok reached the same level of engagement.

The difference is that Facebook has seen a slow and steady growth in usage time.

TikTok has seen usage times increase fivefold in just four years.

It appears that TikTok has a greater appeal with younger audiences.

That includes those who are too young to be on the app. If this rate of growth continues, Facebook has good reason to be worried.

Summing Up

When reading the TikTok vs Facebook statistics it quickly becomes clear this isn’t a fair fight.

Facebook has significantly more users and the users come from all age ranges, upward of 13.

While TikTok has grown rapidly over the last 8-10 years, it is still a long way from Facebook’s popularity.

It’s possible that, in the future, TikTok will become more popular than Facebook.

However, for this to happen the current users would need to stick with TikTok.

That doesn’t seem to be the case, as users age, many switch to Facebook.

Perhaps its appeal as the “grown-up” social media site is exactly why it will remain popular for many years to come

Of course, if you’re reading these statistics to help with a marketing campaign then they should help.

Any product aimed at the youngest generations, under 20 years old, should be marketed on TikTok.

Products and services aimed at those over 25 are likely to see better results on Facebook.

Of course, a good marketer will cover all the major social media platforms.

The above statistics will help to ensure the account and campaign are established to appeal to users.

Naturally, you’ll need to watch this space.

TikTok is growing much faster than Facebook.

The real test for Facebook will be whether its users stay with TikTok as they age, or if they switch to Facebook or another social media platform.
