The platform was first released in 2008.

Naturally, it’s been updated and improved countless times since.

The platform was purchased by Adobe in May 2018 for an impressive $1.68 billion.

That shows how much potential they felt it had. 

Today, it is often referred to as Magento, although its official name is now Adobe Commerce.

1. 0.7% Of Websites Use Magento

However, estimates suggest there are currently 1.8 billion websites, 0.7% of this is a much more impressive sounding 1,260,000.

To further put this into perspective, it’s important to note that many of the existing 1.8 billion websites are not eCommerce sites.

Blogs, social media sites, and similar sites do not need an eCommerce platform. 

As Magento is specifically designed for eCommerce, it’s only an option for eCommerce websites. Estimates suggest there are only 12-24 million of these!

According to the latest figures,  there are 124,926 Magento users based in the US.

In comparison, the UK only has 16,042 users and the Netherlands has just 14,039. 

Interestingly, despite the comparatively high number of users in the US, Magento is a popular option across the globe.

There are users in almost every country, including Russia, Africa, India, and South America. 

Figures show the total number of Magento users is over 1,135,000, the number in the US is roughly 11% of this figure.

It’s potentially due to it being released in the US first or, more likely, because the US is still the biggest economy in the world.

When you look at just the eCommerce websites on the internet it’s easier to see how well Magento is performing. 

WooCommerce is undoubtedly the market leader with an impressive 30% of the market.

Shopify takes the second spot, but is nowhere near the success of WooCommerce.
