FastVPN Review 2023: Summary

FastVPN logo

The headquarters of Namecheap’s FastVPN are in the United States, a member of the 5-eyes intelligence-sharing agreement.

It also has a confusing privacy policy that admits to collecting extensive user data.

That raises several red flags, suggesting that this service does not guarantee the security of your data.

Most top VPNs are headquartered in nations with more stringent data protection laws and no mandatory data retention policies.

Despite this, Namecheap’s primary selling point is its low price and respectable range of features, which are sufficient for most customers.

It does the trick for American Netflix and Disney+ but not for Amazon Prime Video or the BBC iPlayer in the UK.

The service is compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Linux.

Namecheap is also suitable for usage with a virtual private network router.

FastVPN Review 2023: In-depth

Setup Procedure

FastVPN Setup Procedure

Getting Namecheap VPN onto your computer is a breeze; once you’ve signed up for the service, whether for free or a paid subscription, Namecheap VPN will direct you to the appropriate download page or provide step-by-step instructions for manually setting up the service on your system or network.

The company claims that Namecheap VPN may be set up in minutes. It has an intuitive UI and offers a wide variety of server locations.

Next to each server’s physical location, the “ping time” shows how long it takes to establish a connection with that server in real time.

Those who desire the quickest VPN server connection available will appreciate this.

Alternatively, users may select the “Connect VPN” button, and Namecheap VPN will connect them to the fastest server.

Users in the United States, for example, can pick from numerous cities within the country, like Las Vegas, Boston, Seattle, and more, by clicking the drop-down button to the right of each server location.

Namecheap VPN launches automatically on all your gadgets and clients, and you may choose to connect immediately as the app is loaded for maximum online security.

Select a different VPN protocol, such as OpenVPN or IKEv2, and modify your connection settings accordingly.

Privacy And Logging

FastVPN 1

You can “keep your surfing habits private with our rigorous no-log policy,” and FastVPN “won’t track, collect, or disclose any of your logs,” the website says in regards to logging, but this is not reality.

Most of the users are dissatisfied with their privacy policy. If you are looking for the best privacy VPN app, then NordVPN is highly recommended.

We hoped to find more specific information on the website but were unsuccessful.

The only supplemental data we uncovered was a disclaimer in the Windows VPN app installer, which stated that the app only gathered “accumulated unnamed app user information, such as your console and OS model so we can diagnose the problem and strengthen our app,” and that “no tracking of your personal information” was done.

We prefer something with a bit more flesh, like security or no-logging audit, but it doesn’t look like that’s happening anytime soon.

FastVPN is made for the regular user who needs something that ‘simply works’ without worrying about session tracking or encryption protocols like AES-256-CBC or GCM.

Security And Protocols

FastVPN

You should want the highest level of safety available from your premium VPN.

Namecheap’s mobile apps for Android and iOS have several bugs, but the desktop version’s security is good.

The company uses the industry-standard 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) protection.

While Namecheap does gather some data (browser and OS system), data about your surfing history and other actions is secure.

It has integrated certain DNS features into all of its internal applications. There are two tunneling protocols available: OpenVPN and IKEv2.

This is where the commonalities between Namecheap’s desktop and smartphone VPN apps end.

Protect yourself from dangerous public Wi-Fi hotspots and malicious DNS leaks with the Namecheap VPN for Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Unfortunately, none of these are mobile-friendly. Namecheap VPN provides robust protection on desktop computers, but its mobile app offers only the smallest amount.

Locations And Servers

FastVPN

The company claims that FastVPN from Namecheap offers a respectable number of server locations.

The company claims that more than a thousand servers are spread over fifty locations.

Namecheap VPN is mostly an Australian service, though it does offer service to the United States and Europe.

In addition, two of the few Asian servers are located in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Namecheap has some ground to make up in the crowded VPN market, where the best services boast thousands of servers across as many as 90 countries.

Encryption And VPN Protocols

FastVPN from Namecheap support two of the industry’s most trusted protocols: OpenVPN and IKEv2. They achieve a satisfying equilibrium between rapidity and safety.

AES-256, also known as a “military-grade” or “bank-grade” cipher, was chosen as the encryption method by FastVPN.

Since this protection is nearly impossible to break, you may rest easy knowing that no one on the internet can snoop on your network or traffic.

It’s disappointing that only two encryption methods are available through this VPN service, while others offer more. Even so, the safety afforded by these default procedures is sufficient.

Jurisdiction

The headquarters of Namecheap VPN is primarily in the United States. Thus, the service cannot be trusted.

While a VPN service’s privacy policies are more important, knowing which country’s laws apply to a VPN might provide some context and insight into how privacy-focused legislature is in that country.

Namecheap’s jurisdiction isn’t ideal because the United States is a member of the 5 eyes alliance. This could be a major issue depending on the organization’s logging policy.

Scramble Option

This capability functions similarly to a covert protocol, allowing users to avoid the monitoring of their Internet traffic by authorities in repressive nations.

Scramble mode can be activated on OpenVPN connections. Amazingly, for such a cheap VPN, Scramble offers robust capabilities.

In countries with anti-VPN regulations, using Namecheap’s scramble feature may be the only way to get your VPN connection to work.

Buggy VPN Apps

Namecheap VPN also suffered from glitchy software, another issue we encountered. Namecheap’s VPN Windows software failed our initial reliability testing.

We worked with Namecheap’s support team to fix the VPN’s Windows compatibility but were ultimately unable.

Thankfully, we had access to a second Windows laptop, and with its help, we could get the VPN client installed and functioning.

We have been complaining about this issue throughout our FastVPN review, and we still think it has to be fixed before we can recommend the service.

Namecheap’s VPN client also occasionally had trouble connecting to the VPN server. We found that some issue or bug impacted several of the servers we examined.

We found that this unpleasant problem would occur with varying frequency across several servers.

We tried from all over the world. To put it, there are a few issues with Namecheap VPN.

Unclear VPN Data Collection Policies

Namecheap’s Privacy Statement and Terms of Service were examined (ToS).

While the materials were clear and concise, we were still confused about what information was being gathered and when.

They claim to keep an eye on things and log errors for later analysis and fixing.

No Virtual Private Network (VPN) that we’re aware of explicitly disclaims any guarantee of privacy for its users. Perhaps it’s due to Namecheap’s status as a wholly American company.

When We contacted the service, they confirmed that Namecheap VPN does maintain certain basic network logs but that “no personally identifiable data is recorded.

Torrenting Support

FastVPN

To ensure that our FastVPN review is as comprehensive as possible, we ran tests multiple times throughout the day.

This allowed us to provide that our sample was sufficiently large and that our VPN connections were reliable at all hours.

The company claims FastVPN is highly regarded for its speed and dependability, although torrenting is not supported.

The United States, where the corporation is headquartered, has a bad reputation for conducting domestic surveillance.

There are risks associated with utilizing a VPN that does not permit torrenting, as this is a common method for downloading and sharing files online.

The website is sleek and simple to use and provides audio instructions for using a VPN. If you’re a torrent user, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a support guide to assist you.

Namecheap VPN, which works with both OpenVPN and IKEv2, permits torrenting. This service strikes a great mix between speed and protection because of its high-quality security.

It employs Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)-256, the same nearly impenetrable standard employed by banks and government agencies.

According to several customers, the far more secure protocol, IKEv2, was reportedly blocked by Namecheap to stop torrenting.

Censorship Bypass

Namecheap VPN took the approach many of us appreciate, including as many features as possible for the cost.

Incorporating Scramble into the game is a great idea. In the idea, it should be able to penetrate all national firewalls.

The Great Firewall of China is frequently cited as an example of censorship. This firewall is the most effective one, successfully preventing hundreds of VPN connections daily.

So, we sent the software to our Chinese testers to ensure it functions normally in that region.

As was to be expected, they were unable to make Scramble function.

The provider is completely useless in this nation due to the Great Firewall’s frequent blocking of internet access.

To recap, Namecheap VPN is not something you should use if you want to access blocked content in China, Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, or Russia.

Supported Devices

Namecheap VPN works with Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, among others. It’s also compatible with routers.

Furthermore, the company boasts a remarkably limitless multi-login function, allowing you to link as many gadgets as you like to a single account.

OpenVPN allows you to set up Namecheap VPN on your routers, provided your router’s firmware can read VPN configuration files.

Plans And Pricing

FastVPN Pricing

FastVPN offers some of the most competitive initial pricing, with substantial savings on your initial term.

If you sign up for the monthly subscription, for example, you won’t have to pay anything for the first month (essentially a 30-day free trial), and after that, the price will increase to a still-great $5.88 per month.

During the first year, the annual plan costs just $1 per month, but it jumps to $2.88.

Long-term preparations have not been made. These are exceptionally cheap initial rates (which are also favorable at renewal).

While Private Internet Access is one of our favorite VPNs, its monthly subscriptions still can’t compete with FastVPN’s $2.75 (billed monthly) and $3.33 (billed annually) pricing.

If you give in to temptation, you can pay using a credit card or PayPal; if any problem occurs, you have 30 days to get your money back.

Customer Support

Though Namecheap VPN’s support team quickly responds and seems genuinely interested in resolving any issues, we were underwhelmed by the overall service.

Our first two experiences with support resulted in the initial contact person being unable to assist us and transferring us to another agent who, they claimed, would be more equipped to do so.

In one situation, we got our question answered by the second-tier support team.

Still, in the other example, the Namecheap Windows VPN client was so problematic that not even the third-tier support team could fix it.

Namecheap relies on a third firm to provide the VPN’s underlying software, so perhaps these problems may be resolved.

Review Verdict

This review of FastVPN provides a wealth of information, including an overview of the service’s main features and instructions for installation.

The lack of clarity in the policy’s protection of user data is disappointing.

It’s especially problematic because the VPN’s headquarters are in the United States.

You can get a quicker VPN like NordVPN with superior unblocking capabilities and safer privacy policies for roughly the same price.

You can fix this, and we suggest using NordVPN. NordVPN has cornered the virtual private network services market with many satisfied customers.

Customers are raving about the platform everywhere you go, praising its fast transfer speeds, online security features, video streaming, alternatives to torrenting, and user-friendly internet browsing features.
