Let’s break this down. With the current WireGuard protocol, Surfshark is truly speedy. Only an 8-12% loss in speed when using US and UK servers is impressive. You can binge-watch 4K Netflix, download large files, and understand the true meaning of lag-free gaming. We were able to torrent a 10GB file in minutes using a UK server, and playing Call of Duty using the New York server was responsive and crisp. However, things look quite bleak when you switch to the OpenVPN protocol instead.

Speed was cut in half, with a brutal 47-51% loss in speed. While WireGuard is fast and efficient, switching to OpenVPN on outdated devices or routers could drag your speed down. But when we put Surfshark in context with the competition, the holes start to become clear.

You can bundle Surfshark’s antivirus for a fee, and we strongly suggest skipping the additional fee. We recently looked at the latest AV-Test labs’ results, which came out in July. This months-long gap in verification provides a substantial trust gap. While their privacy policy does state they do not log your IP address, browsing history, or connection timestamps, we have no independent verification that any of these statements are, in fact, true.

Router Firmware Bugs:

If you’re looking to protect your entire home network, installing a VPN on your router is the way to go. However, when we tested an Asus RT-AX86U Router, the setup revealed some troubling flaws with Surfshark.

• DNS Leaks: In 3 of 10 reboots of the router, we found DNS leaks. A DNS leak is when requests from your browser to different websites mistakenly go through your normal ISP instead of the VPN tunnel, and your browsing activity becomes known. This is a major failure.
• Kill Switch Failure: The router-level kill switch failed to activate 27% of the time when we simulated connection drops. This means that there is a 1 in 4 chance that if the VPN connection stumbles, your entire network is exposed.
