Let’s face it. Demographics play a major role in how effective marketing is done.

When you want to promote your business or brand, you need to first know your audience.

You don’t want to market something to the Gen-Z crowd when your product or service is more in tune with Baby Boomers.

Demographics include age, gender, location, and other aspects that describe a target audience.

Influencers also use demographics to target their audiences according to the products they promote.

Not everyone wants the same things, so it’s wise to know your target audience.

If you’re promoting something on Instagram, you need to know things like what percentage of Instagram users are female.

The following will provide Instagram information and statistics about the audiences and demographics you need to know to develop your marketing strategy.

What Percentage of Instagram Users Are Female in 2024?

According to recent demographic data, 57% of Instagrammers are female. 43% are male.

This leaves a substantial gap, especially when it comes to the overall numbers.

To put this into perspective, 546 million Instagrammers are female, while 528 million are male.

This begs another question, “Why are there more women than men on the platform?”

Though it seems that the percentages between male and female Instagram users are close, there are still more females than males.

Some speculation states that mothers are historically responsible for taking most of the family pictures.

While that may be a waning responsibility now mostly shared more equally between parents and partners, it’s still common for moms to take the most pictures of their children.

Female Instagram Users by Age

According to a chart on Statista, here is the breakdown of Instagram users by age and gender.

  • 3.7% 13 to 17 years old – female
  • 13.1% 18 to 24 years old – female
  • 14.8% 25 to 34  years old – female
  • 8.3% 35 to 44 years old – female
  • 4.5% 45 to 54  years old – female
  • 2.3% 55 to 64 years old – female
  • 1.3% 65+ years old – female

Oddly enough, males outweigh female Instagram users between the 13- to 34-year-old range.

Female Instagram users between 45 and 65+ outweigh male Instagram users.

The largest gap in percentages between male and female users is in the 18- to 24-year-old range by 4.8% more males.

Overall, however the largest group by gender is female across every age.

Why is the Percentage Skewed Towards Females?

Instagram

While some data regarding why there are more females on Instagram, much of the following data was gathered from studies and polls.

While globally, 57% of women compared to 43% of men are using Instagram, in America, 58% of Instagrammers are female (2016).

We share this fact because the next section will discuss studies primarily from America. American women use Instagram 55% more than men.

One reason stated for why women are more drawn to Instagram has to do with aesthetics and beauty standards.

Researchers at Fordham University claim that these beauty aspects are more conventional, which seems to appeal to American females.

Instagram is also a draw for design, beauty brands, and fashion.

Influencers often share videos regarding the latest makeup trends, Instagram filters, fashion trends, and other fashion and beauty related content.

According to case studies, younger women, like teenagers, are dominating on this platform and across all visual platforms.

It seems they really like the flawless and fun looks they can achieve with makeup plus filters.

Generally speaking, women (young to old) want to be beautiful.

Even though all are beautiful, there is a conventional standard that they want to achieve, which is different according to age and culture.

Instagram is probably the most diverse of the giants of social media.

The other reason, according to data gathered by Katrin Tildenberg of Tallinn University, is that more females may be using Instagram because they are mothers.

Mothers have long been the memory makers in picture taking in families.

Whether they share some ‘brag book’ type pictures of their kids, or home activities (pretty or not), moms rule picture taking.

Other studies reported by Medium shows that females are prone to use general social media more than males.

Percentage of Female Users on Other Social Media Sites

If you want to know how Instagram compares to other social media platforms, here are those percentages of male and female users.

  • Facebook: 56% male, 44% female
  • Instagram: 57% female, 43% male
  • Twitter: 68% male, 32% female
  • LinkedIn: 51% male, 49% female
  • Pinterest: 78% female, 22% male
  • TikTok: 59% female, 41% male
  • Snapchat: 58% female, 40% male
  • YouTube: 72% of all male and female Internet users

As you can see, females do use social media more than males in general.

Conclusion

If you are an influencer, brand, or business, you now have some Instagram female demographics from which to use for developing your marketing and promotional strategies.

You also have a few male demographics for comparison and other social media channels compared to Instagram.

More numbers for you relate to Instagram’s annual revenue by year is also something you need to plan and strategize how to market on Instagram.

  • 2015: $0.5 billion
  • 2016: $1.8 billion
  • 2017: $4.1 billion
  • 2018: $10.3 billion
  • 2019: $17.7 billion
  • 2020: $24 billion

The numbers for 2021 should be researched and considered when they come out.

It’s imperative to have updated information to plan your Instagram marketing strategy.

If you’re one of Instagram’s regular users who don’t need to strategize for business, you also have more information about the female demographics of the platform to help you better understand why you see ads and content that you see.

Not matter what, these Instagram stats and facts are interesting to learn.

If you’re female, how do you use Instagram and what products and services are marketed to you?

Take a closer look at your timeline and play closer to attention to the sponsored ads and content to see if you’re the ideal audience for a brand or business.
