Roblox has taken the world by storm.

Its unique concept takes away from traditional ideas of gaming and lends a new perspective to game developers.

But why is it successful?

The answer is simple. Players love minigames that they can play easily on their phones. After all, over 79% of Roblox games are played on mobile devices.

That leads us to the question of how many people actively use Roblox daily?

And exactly how much does Roblox rack up in revenue every year?

Luckily, Roblox has been very transparent about its usage and revenue growth statistics.

To give you an idea of how successful the platform is, here are the top Roblox statistics in 2024.

Key Roblox Statistics 2024

  • Roblox has over 43.2 million daily active users.
  • In terms of concurrent active users, the highest number of users that have been active on Roblox at the same time was 5.7 million.
  • Roblox has 202 million monthly active users.
  • Over 8 million small and big-time game developers are using Roblox as a means of promoting new games. Due to this, Roblox has been home to over 40 million different games, at least since 2008.
  • Roblox developers have amassed combined earnings of $328 million.
  • The platform has been played and downloaded in over 180 countries. The most daily active users come from North America, contributing to 33% of the user base. Europe makes up 29% of the user base. And Asia comes in last, making only 13% of the userbase.
  • In the last quarter of 2020, Roblox registered over 9.73 billion hours of playtime on the platform. That makes it one of the most engaged platforms in the world.
  • Roblox features over 40 million different games available on the platform. Of these, the most popular is “Adopt Me!”, racking up a total visit count of 25 billion. However, the longest played game is Welcome to Bloxburg, with over 22 minutes of average playtime.
  • Over 29% of Roblox’s userbase is made of preteens aged 9 to 12. And over 25% of the userbase consists of children under 9. As for gender disparity, 51% of players are male, 44% female, and 5% registered their gender as “Unknown.”
  • Roblox is more prevalent among mobile devices, with mobiles accounting for 72% of all Roblox gaming sessions. However, compared to that, only 25% of all Roblox sessions are carried out on desktops. And only 3% are done on gaming consoles.
  • In Q1 of 2020, Roblox made a total of $588.7 million in revenue. Most of the revenue comes from selling Robux. In 2020, Roblox acquired over $1.24 billion through selling Robux alone. Users end up spending an average of $13.73 on Robux.

Overview Of Roblox

Roblox is an online gaming platform that hosts over 40 million games. Many people confuse Roblox with a game, but it’s much more than that.

It allows developers to create games based on certain game mechanics and character designs. In addition, it gives developers full liberty to make a game based on any genre and any unique concept.

Launched on the 1st of September, 2006, Roblox did not gain a lot of popularity. That was because internet access was still not widespread.

And the newer concept did not appeal to people at first. But soon, as developers added more and more games to the platform, it grew to become the gaming giant it is today.

Roblox Worldwide Usage Statistics

Roblox

Roblox has a userbase that extends across the entire world. And as such, it’s one of the most used applications.

To put that into perspective, Roblox was downloaded and used by people from 180 different countries in 2020.

And the numbers are only expected to rise further.

In the same year, Roblox had over 437 million downloads on mobile across all countries.

And the increase in daily activity was partly due to the pandemic when daily activity increased by 40%.

Currently, statistics show that it has over 43.2 million daily active users, at least as of 2021 Q2.

Of those, 33% are in the US and Canada. To give you a rough estimate, that’s about 14.2 million users coming from those countries.

However, that number is not increasing very rapidly. It has only risen by about 6.14% since the second quarter of 2020.

Europe delivers even more daily active users, making up to 29% of all users on Roblox. That’s close to the size of the userbase in the US and Canada combined. More specifically, that’s about 10.4 million daily active users.

Asia comes in 3rd place, with 15% of all daily active users being based in Asia-Pacific.

That makes over 6.48 million Asian users. The rest of the world combined contributes about 23% of the total daily active userbase. That’s close to 9.936 million users from other parts of the world.

Roblox Revenue & Spending Statistics 2024

Being one of the most popular games for over 180 countries, it’s no surprise that the company has seen some financial success.

In 2017, statistics show that it’s total revenue was about $45 million.

However, by 2020, that had quickly grew to $920 million.

This rapid increase in revenue was partly due to a rise in user spending.

Roblox has many services that users can buy, including in-game currency and special avatars. In the 4th quarter of 2018, Roblox acquired over $91 million in user spending.

However, that number quickly grew. In the 4th quarter of 2019, for instance, the total user spending of Roblox users was $174 million. And by the 3rd quarter of 2020, that number had risen to $308 million.

A large part of that spending came from Robux. In 2018, the total Robux booking was about $499 million. That number grew to about $1.31 billion in 2021.

From these numbers, it’s safe to guess that Roblox currently has an astronomically high market value. And you wouldn’t be wrong.

In 2017, Roblox’s valuation was $1.1 billion, a number quite high for any company. This value was gained over an approximately 10-year period.

And in 2020, the valuation was only $4 billion. However, something flipped in 2021 that saw the market value of Roblox soar rapidly.

In 2021, Roblox had a valuation of a whopping $38 billion. That’s almost nine times the increase since the preceding year.

Of course, this was mainly due to the pandemic, which led to more users downloading the app and using it.

However, this was also party due to the IPO in 2020, which generated an 850% increase in Roblox’s value.

Roblox User Demographics 2024

Roblox

Although statistics in 2024 show it is popular among all age groups, most of its daily active users are younger.

To be more specific, users between 9 and 12 years of age make up the bulk of the daily active users. They make up about 29% of the users.

In the second place, users under nine years of age make up 25% of the daily active users. This means that teenagers and young adults are not all those fonds of Roblox.

But that’s not to say that older people don’t enjoy Roblox. Over 13% of the daily active users are between 13 and 16 years of age.

And 16% are 17 to 24 years. However, it’s not a popular game among older adults, as all people above 25 combined make up only 14% of the userbase.

Although there is age disproportionality between young and old players, demographics data shows there doesn’t seem to be much difference in genders. In September 2020, over 44% of the total userbase of Roblox identified as female.

In contrast to that, about 51% of the daily active users identified as male.

These statistics don’t show much of a gender disparity. However, people who don’t identify as either or have entered their gender as “Unknown” in-game make up only 5% of the userbase.

When you compare these statistics to those of previous years, you’ll notice a gender gap that has been bridged. In 2016, the gaming app only had 35% female users, significantly growing in 2020.

Roblox Monthly Active Users 2024

Roblox

Roblox statistics for 2024 show that it has over 436 million downloads.

But of those, relatively few are monthly active users. Hence, getting a better idea of the growth of active users over time provides a better picture.

In February of 2016, the monthly daily active users of Roblox were only slightly over 9 million.

However, in December of 2016, that number grew to more than 30 million. From there, the graph has been mostly smooth, with a fairly decent slope upward.

In January 2020, the number of daily active users had increased up to 119 million. And this was mainly in part due to the ongoing pandemic.

As the pandemic situation worsened, people started immersing themselves in online gaming.

And by the end of November 2020, the daily active users’ size had significantly grown. It grew from 119 million at the start of 2020 to about 199 million towards the end.

As of April 2021, Roblox has 202 million monthly active users.

Roblox Worlds & Games

Roblox allows game developers to generate worlds that other players can access.

These words make up the core of the Roblox app, as the app has no games of itself.

Roblox worlds can range from simple games with minimal rules. Or the games can be as advanced as solving a murder mystery or living in an entire city.

These games are often played professionally. But since over 70% of Roblox users access the games on mobiles, they’re most likely played as a pastime.

Currently, Roblox has over 40 million games available on the app. Of these games, “Adopt Me!” is the most popular, with over 23.78 billion visits in total.

The game focuses on adopting and caring for a variety of different virtual pets. Users spend up to 12.93 minutes on average playing the game.

After “Adopt Me!” The Tower of Hell is the most popular, with approximately 14.22 billion visits in total.

The game involves climbing a tower that is randomly generated and gets replaced every 8 minutes. Users spend on average 3.81 minutes playing the game.

In third place, we have MeepCity, an interactive city where you can live, socialize, and trade. The city has racked up 11.6 billion visits and has an average user spend time of about 7.54 minutes.

Below that, there’s Brookhaven. It’s a similar role-playing game where characters get to live in houses, drive vehicles, and go about their daily chores.

This game has over 10.7 billion visits in total. And users can spend up to 13 minutes playing the game.

Other popular games include Piggy, a total visit count of 9.26 billion, and an average playtime of 7.45 minutes.

A high school simulator game, Royale High also tops the charts, with 6.4 billion total visits. Roblox players spend as much as 15.46 minutes playing the game every day.

Of the top 10 most visited Roblox games, the one with the longest average playtime is Welcome to Bloxburg.

With a staggering average playtime of 22.64 minutes and a total visit count of 4.98 billion, the game is quite popular among younger users.

Roblox Daily Engagement

How much time do users spend on Roblox?

Luckily, Roblox itself measured the time spent by users on its platform and crunched those numbers for us.

But before we get into that, first, it’s important to learn how Roblox calculates these numbers. Roblox doesn’t just calculate the amount of time spent playing games.

But it also takes into account time spent searching for new games and time spent creating games.

So, how much time do users spend on the platform? The numbers may surprise you. Roblox reports that users will spend a total of 9.73 billion hours on the platform in the 2nd quarter of 2021.

As compared to the first quarter of 2018, this number has increased. In early 2018, the total engagement hours were a mere 2.1 billion.

And it’s not just 2018. Statistics show it saw a 1.3-billion hours increase in engagement in the first half of 2021. And the number is expected to rise as the graph slopes upward irregularly.

For an average user, the average daily time spent using Roblox is a little under 2.6 hours (156 minutes). This number includes time spent developing games.

Now the only mystery left is why Roblox has seen such a massive rise in engagement. And the answer is simple. Ever since the company’s launch in 2006, the internet has become more accessible.

Almost everyone has a smartphone nowadays, something that remained only a dream in 2006.

And regions like Europe and North America have been using fiber internet for ages. Other regions like Asia and Africa are also catching up.

Moreover, newer technology is enabling people to download games without worrying about space or RAM.

Roblox Usage By Device

Roblox

One of the major goals of any website or app developer is accessibility across all platforms. And with a user base of over 43 million people, it’s no surprise that Roblox has caught on.

Although many users play Roblox games on their desktops, most of them are mobile users. As a result, over 72% of all Roblox daily usage sessions will occur on mobile devices.

And the main reason for that is that Roblox is a gaming platform featuring many different games. And most of these games are short ones, lasting about 8-10 minutes.

This makes it ideal for mobile users who don’t want to spend too much time on mobile gaming. Games that include short rounds of 1-2 minutes can even be played in between daily chores.

When you compare that with desktop statistics, you’ll see why people don’t prefer Roblox as a desktop game. Only 25% of Roblox players access the platform via their desktops or laptops.

Those who do access it through their PCs are the professional players. We’re talking YouTubers and popular streamers.

And what about the remaining 3%? Well, they make up the smallest demographic that accesses the platform through gaming consoles.

It’s quite evident that Roblox is not very popular as a game that can be played on a gaming console.

Roblox Developer Payout

Roblox

Roblox games are not made by the company itself. Instead, these games are developed by small and big-time game developers.

So with game developers being the beating heart of Roblox, does it support its developers?

Currently, Roblox has over 9.5 million developers. In 2017, that number was 1.7 million. And in 2016, it was even lower, at 634,000 developers.

But how much does a developer make when they make games on Roblox? The total developer payout has been growing since 2018. And it’s only going to get higher.

In the first quarter of 2018, Roblox developers made a combined $16.28 million. Sounds impressive, but not as much as when compared to other years.

In the last quarter of 2018 alone, according to statistics, developers were making a combined $21.1 million.

And by the 2nd quarter of 2021, developers made a total of $129.71 million. The rise has been straightforward and will continue to go higher.

Roblox has been catching up with modern technology such as crypto as well. Between September 2019 and September 2020, 960,000 Roblox developers earned through cryptocurrency.

And of those, only 3,800 met the qualifications required to convert Robux into real fiat money.

However, only about 2,800 developers went on to exchange the currency for real-world money.

To help support developers, Roblox has set aside 30% of its revenue for awarding developers. That isn’t to say that Roblox developers earn a lot, though.

About 99.47% of Roblox developers earn $1,000 or less a year. Only a very select few (32, to be exact) made more than $1 million in 2020.

And by September 2020, around 962,000 developers did not gain a single penny from Roblox rewards. Only 29 developers made over $1 million and 3 made over $10 million in Roblox rewards.

But Roblox did pay up to $250 million in 2020 to its developers through its Developer Exchange Program.

Final Word

Roblox has tipped the scales when it comes to game development. Developers and players alike are extremely fond of the liberating concept, and often play using a VPN.

Hence, it comes off as no surprise that Roblox has been making in revenue a lot more than other gaming companies. Now, given, a lot of that credit is due to its developers.

And through its Developer Exchange Program, Roblox is supporting the untiring minds that keep the platform alive.

Now, after glancing at these Roblox statistics in 2024, you can fully marvel at the gaming giant that we all call Roblox!
