OVPN Review 2024: Summary

OVPN logo

When it comes to your online anonymity, OVPN says they are the VPN provider you can trust the most.

In other words, it’s not meant to serve a huge audience.

The company claims that OVPN provides access to limited ultra-private, high-performance VPN servers worldwide at carefully chosen data centers.

OVPN supports different devices and claims to include multiple VPN protocols (like WireGuard) and robust encryption protocols (including ChaCha20), as well as a wealth of configuration options for power users to fine-tune the VPN’s efficiency as they see fit.

This OVPN review will look closely at the service and its features.

We’ll go over the unique selling points of this VPN and compare it to industry standards for things like security, speed, and streaming compatibility.

After reading this, you should have a decent notion of whether or not this advanced VPN service is right for you.

  • Security and confidentiality are of the utmost importance.
  • Device-specific apps available in abundance
  • There were no leaks found.
  • Help with many file-sharing protocols, including streaming and torrenting
  • Enhanced configuration capabilities
  • Not a big server cluster
  • Pricier-than-usual membership fees
  • Limited money-back promise

OVPN Review 2024: In-depth

OVPN At A Glance

Small VPN provider OVPN released its service in 2015. This company’s location in Sweden is both an advantage and a disadvantage.

The good news is that the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Swedish Data Protection Authority (DPA) work together to safeguard your personal information in Sweden.

Sweden is a member of the 14 Eyes monitoring alliance, which is bad news.

Your privacy may be at risk as a result of a conflict between the protections afforded by the law and the requirements of this strong monitoring coalition.

As we’ll see, OVPN’s design does not offer a robust barrier against monitoring of any kind.

Since OVPN does not offer a free trial period, you must evaluate the service using the 10-day money-back guarantee.

In this regard, OVPN falls short, as its free trial period of 7 days is in comparison to the 30 days offered by most of the best VPNs.

The OVPN client is rather basic, but it has a limited of customization options. It is easy for complete novices who know nothing about computers to set up a VPN.

After entering your login information, the main interface will load with four additional tabs: connection, statistics, system, and settings.

Select a server from the list in the Connections tab to establish a connection with it.

It will also give you the most important data about your network, like download and upload rates, the current time, and more.

The number of visitors in the past 60 and 24 hours may be viewed on the statistics tab.

Access the client configuration and security settings via the settings tab.

You can set the client to automatically connect at startup, display a notification upon connection, decrease to the tray, avoid DNS leaks, activate DNScript, and turn on the kill switch automatically here.

The OVPN client may be difficult to use for users without extensive experience in networking and software debugging.

Specifically, if you log out without properly disconnecting, you risk losing Internet connectivity because your preferences won’t have been stored.

If you are looking for a top-notch VPN service, then NordVPN is highly recommended.

How Secure Is OVPN?

In terms of security, the company claims that the OVPN uses state-of-the-art protocols and protocols comprising 256-bit encryption and a 4096-bit RSA authentication key.

Your data will be encrypted and decrypted at the highest level possible as it travels from your gadget to its destination and back again.

The encryption key is regenerated with each login due to full forward secrecy.

This may sound difficult, but it’s crucial to understand that it means your past session has no bearing on your current one.

One privacy feature we look for in a VPN is DNS leak protection, and OVPN doesn’t have it on all of its servers.

Sometimes, your ISP won’t be able to monitor the websites you visit due to this feature, which encrypts all of your online traffic.

To protect yourself from man-in-the-middle attacks, you can also activate DNScrypt.

There was, however, one aspect that we found disagreeable. To protect your IP address from being leaked through WebRTC, OVPN recommends using their browser plugin.

Apps that provide VPN services will typically shield you from any potential leaks without requiring additional software installation.

Speed: Is OVPN Fast?

Since we last tested OVPN, the service’s speeds have decreased dramatically. Its speeds have always been respectable, but the result is the same and has seen a noticeable decrease.

Any VPN service may cause a slight speed reduction, but the best ones almost hide this.

Open VPN cannot now be considered one of these. A slow connection (05 Mbps+) probably won’t make a noticeable difference.

Over servers in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, We measured OVPN’s bandwidth and latency. See below for regional server averages and worldwide medians in terms of speed.

  • Worldwide: 8 Mbps
  • North America: 7 Mbps
  • Asian region: 23 Mbps
  • Europe: 6 Mbps

OpenVPN and WireGuard are the only VPN protocols that OVPN is compatible with.

Due to the lack of support for other protocols in its desktop programs, all testing was done using OpenVPN.

Numerous router models are compatible with OVPN as well. Because of this, we could connect our PS4 to our home network by configuring a client connection to OVPN on my pfSense system.

Video gaming didn’t run smoothly over an OVPN connection. In our testing of three games, we experienced lags, freezes, or connection drops.

The OVPN Privacy Policy

Very few VPN services are honest with their users about their commitment to privacy.  There is a strict no-logs policy in place at the company.

For you personally, what does this entail?

When a user connects to an OVPN server, no activity is recorded in any way, shape, or form.

This encompasses traffic, timestamps, DNS queries, IP addresses, MAC addresses, and bandwidth use.

As a result, they have no idea who is using their service, when, or what they are doing. All users should find this extremely helpful.

What about legal mandates, then? There is no way for a court to obtain consumer information from OVPN because the company does not keep any records or information about its users.

That is to say; they lack anything interesting to impart. In addition, the corporation knows very little about you because an external entity handles all financial transactions.

Jurisdiction & Applicable Laws

OVPN is based in Sweden. This necessitates compliance with Swedish legislation and any applicable international laws to which Sweden is a party.

In the case of the 14 Eyes Alliance, for example, membership is mandatory due to information sharing with other governments.

If a VPN provider records user activity, privacy-conscious internet users like us might be a red flag. However, OVPN appears not to maintain any audit trail.

Access to a person’s online activities in Sweden requires a court warrant.

Additionally, there is no way to confirm if someone is an OVPN subscriber because the service deletes all user information the instant a computer is switched off.

In addition, if OVPN finds itself in court, it is covered by a unique insurance policy that pays for legal expenditures.

OVPN servers 1

The company claims that there are currently 83 servers in 21 locations throughout 14 countries that are part of the OVPN network.

There are many of them in the northern and western parts of Europe and the United States of America. However, some of the servers are located in Singapore and Australia

Users in these areas will benefit greatly from the service. Without local servers, it will be challenging for the organization to win over customers in other regions.

This is not the smallest network available.

Some providers offer a lot fewer data centers than others. In terms of uptime, the organization promises a guaranteed 9.5%. In most cases, it’s just 10 percent.

We have been upfront in our OVPN review about our disappointment with this feature, and we remain of the opinion that it must be improved before we can wholeheartedly recommend OVPN.

Geoblock Restrictions Removal

Removing geoblocks is crucial in establishing a connection to a foreign country.

Simply connecting to a VPN server in your home country will keep you safe and secure while browsing the web.

However, accessing international libraries like the US ones requires logging in with a US IP address.

Netflix’s ability to identify and ban VPN IP addresses has improved significantly in recent years. Unfortunately, OVPN fails to bypass the geo-restrictions.

Supported Devices

Although OpenVPN works with every platform imaginable, it only provides native programs for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Manual setup is required for both iOS and Android devices. However, they provide helpful setup guides on their website.

Design-wise, OVPN apps don’t impress me very well. Their app design is quite simplistic.

Their apps, however, perform admirably, which is the main consideration. Small installation files are available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

The OVPN Windows software, for example, has a relatively small file size of 75,4 MB. As a result of the minimal size of the distribution, setup time is minimal.

The company claims that apps developed by OVPN are extremely user-friendly.

The aesthetics of OVPN may not be to everyone’s taste, but if that isn’t your concern, it’s a good option.

OVPN Browser Extensions

So far as we are aware, OVPN is the only VPN service that works with browsers except for Chrome and Firefox.

Extensions for four browsers are available from OVPN.

  • Firefox
  • Chrome
  • Vivaldi
  • Opera

OVPN’s browser plugins are more than just a proxy; they perform like a full VPN. It safeguards you from intrusive advertisements, stops firms from tracking you, stops WebRTC leaks, and alerts you whenever you visit a site that may require a VPN connection.

OVPN Security Protocols

Since the protocols used to route data are crucial, we verified that OVPN employed secure methods for your web browsing.

As its name implies, OpenVPN is the only protocol supported by OVPN. This protocol uses the open-source, 256-bit AES encryption that We described earlier.

However, adjusting its settings would require some technical know-how. Although, OVPN does provide quite detailed instructions on how to achieve this.

  • OVPN doesn’t work with less secure older protocols like PPTP and L2TP.
  • A new open-source VPN security protocol, WireGuard, is available via OVPN. Despite its relative novelty, this fix is included in Linux 5.6, which will be released in March 2020.

We were pleased to discover that OVPN, while a relatively young company, is eager to take advantage of the finest that the cybersecurity market has to offer, such as Wireguard, which is widely regarded as a platform that includes state-of-the-art cryptography.

Browsing And Streaming

OVPN worldmap 1

We could see a discernible difference between our connection with and without a VPN when performing normal online browsing.

Most of the local servers we tried impacted how we normally use the Internet.

Certain pages, including Netflix’s, took a little slower to load while connecting to the US server. However, the lag time we’re discussing is more than a minute.

Appreciable variations in streaming speed were seen during our testing. We had trouble watching Netflix episodes and movies from Dutch and American servers.

And we did even notice many slowdowns in YouTube quality due to the servers.

Downloading And Gaming

We also tried it out with file downloads. OVPN had trouble with this. We were unable to download some rather sizable files quickly.

With regards to file uploading, we tested OVPN a did not find it to be top-notch. In fact, we had also trouble uploading multiple files at once. Our speed tests led us to expect this result.

At last, we played some online games using the VPN. Visually demanding games ran smoothly with no noticeable slowdown.

We did experience a decrease in latency in some circumstances, but this is to be expected when a lot is happening on screen.

Unfortunately, we did experience many apparent lags, and the high ping surprisingly ruined our performance.

Please remember that our experience was unique, and yours may be, too, as each situation and game is different.

OVPN Pricing

It’s expensive when you consider the high quality of service you receive and the genuine care taken with your confidentiality and security.

Monthly payments are $11, semiannual payments are $6.99, and annual revenues of $4.99 offer significant discounts.

Then, some incentives can further reduce your charge, bringing the total to an already reasonable level.

The amount you save on your monthly subscription depends on your buddy’s plan when they join through the referral program.

It’s a fantastic deal overall, and you can sweeten the deal by inviting your pals along.

The service provider accepts only a limited number of online payment types, including but not limited to the following:

  • BitCoin
  • PayPal
  • Credit Card

Money-Back Guarantee And Free Trial

If the service is subpar, a refund policy is a safety net for new consumers.

Top VPN providers typically give new customers 30 days to evaluate their service and request a refund if they aren’t satisfied.

OVPN offers a 10-day return period, while some competitors only provide seven days.

There is a ten-day window in which users can request a refund, but there is a catch: they may not receive it.

Customer Support

Users may require assistance on occasion. What’s the point of working alone when you can have help?

And that’s why a solid customer service infrastructure is crucial to the success of any business.

Here, the most fundamental means of contacting support—emails and tickets—are available. In addition, the official websites promote a few live chats.

A live chat button appears at the bottom of every page. You can choose this option, but it won’t allow you to communicate with them directly.

You’ll have to send a message to your email account and hope they respond to you electronically.

It clearly states that there is no customer service infrastructure in place that operates around the clock.

Review Verdict

This OVPN review provides various details, from a summary of its features to instructions for setting it up.

It is painfully slow and has limited server availability, and blocks access to content originating in the United Kingdom.

While OVPN can help, a premium VPN service, like NordVPN, will provide you with even more security features and allow you to access geo blocked content.
