Starting as a garage project, Jeff Bezos successfully turned his vision into the biggest bookstore in the world.

Today, an estimated 50 million book titles are sold on the Amazon e-commerce platform – a number accounting for both hard and electronic copies.

An article published by TechCrunch in 2014 claims there were 3.4 million titles sold on the site at that time.

This means Amazon successfully grew its book-selling business in less than a decade to make it where it is now.

Beginnings of Amazon

Like Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak’s garage project which turned out to be the biggest tech company of all time, Jeff Bezos started from nothing.

Bezos used his parents’ life savings worth $250,000 and $10,000 of his own to fund his new project in 1994. He initially listed 20 products that could be easily marketed and sold online.

He later narrowed to list to five: compact disks, hardware, software, videos, and books and went for the latter.

First Book Ever Sold on Amazon

The first book ever sold on Amazon online bookstore is a Douglas Hofstadter title called “Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies: Computer Models of Mechanisms of Thought” on July 16, 1995.

The following months were stellar, and Amazon became an instant hit.

By its second month in business, the bookstore giant is already catering across 50 states in the United States, with $20,000 in average sales per week.

Amazon Books During the Pandemic

The pandemic rekindled people’s relationship with the good ol’ books.

With this, Amazon welcomed a sudden influx of book sales, selling out 89 million copies during the year.

The enterprise had to hire 175,000 new permanent and contractual workers to accommodate order requests during the year.

Amazon Publishing

Due to its popularity, Amazon launched its own publishing venture, Amazon Publishing, in 2009.

Today, the platform is home to 1,000 new titles on its roster every year, with an average selling price of $6 for e-books.

Amazon is also a favorite of self-published authors. In 2018, its self-publishing division CreateSpace dominated the market with 1.4 million copies listed during the year.
