How many Americans are there in 2022?

In 2022, America is 246 years old, which is still relatively young for a nation. The population has naturally grown substantially over the last 200 plus years and features the most diverse population in the world.

In this article, we will discuss things about how many Americans there are and other demographics related to the country’s population.

Let’s face it, America has long been known as “the land of the free”, so people from other countries often go there to seek the “American Dream.”

The United States of America was founded on July 2, 1776. By July 4th, the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Upon this document, the name “United States of America” is written. On September 9, 1776, the declaration was officially adopted by Congress.

The population in America in 1776 was estimated to be around 2.5 million, which is based on the first census in this country taken in 1790.

Therefore, the population for 1776 is an approximation. 2.5 million is the officially accepted number.

As you can imagine, the American population is substantially larger today with people from all over the world now making this country their home.

How Many Americans Are There in 2022?

The last census taken in America was in 2020.

According to the 2020 census, there were 331.4 million people living in the United States of America.

Of that number, 77.9%, or 258.3 million were 18 years old or older.

The current projection of the United States population stands at 334,773,913 as of 2022.

This is only a portion of the world’s population, which as of January 2022 stands at 7,868,872,451.

The population increases and decreases daily due to several factors such as births, deaths, and new citizens moving to the country.

The estimated births in January 2022 is 4.3 births versus the estimated deaths, which is 2.0 per second across the globe.

Consequently, due to births, deaths, and international migration, the American population grows by one person per every 40 seconds.

How Many Americans Are There Per State?

It would take too long to go through all 50 states of the United States of America to mention each state’s population.

So, we will keep it to the top ten states with the highest populations and the bottom ten states with the lowest population for these purposes.

How Many Americans Are There in the Most Populated States?

  • Texas has 29,730,311 people
  • Florida has 21,944,577 people
  • New York has 19,299,981 people
  • Pennsylvania has 12,804,123 people
  • Ohio has 11,714,618 people
  • Georgia has 10,830,007 people
  • North Carolina has 10,701,002 people
  • Michigan has 9,992,427 people

How Many Americans Are There in the Least Populated States?

  • Wyoming has 581,075 people
  • Vermont has 623,251 people
  • The District of Columbia (DC) has 714,153 people
  • Alaska has 74,357 people

  • Rhode Island has 1,061,509 people
  • Montana has 1,085,004 people
  • Maine has 1,354.522 people

On the West Coast, California is, by far, the most populous state with almost 40 million residents that make up 12% of the total country’s population.

The East Coast has New York, which is that region’s most populous state with about 20 million people residing there.

Also on the East Coast is Rhode Island where the state is the smallest in land mass, but has a larger population than many of the bigger states.

Wyoming is the smallest state in terms of population and usually experiences a negative growth rate of about 0.60% each year.

Essentially, California is the most populated and Wyoming is the least populated in America.

How Many Americans Are There by Diversity?

America has been known for its diversity of cultures for many years, but now the country is consistently growing in diversity, according to population statistics.

Currently, over two-fifths of the American population identifies as people of color.

The non-Hispanic Caucasian population has reached an all-time low of 57.8% since 1980, according to the 2020 census.

The biggest Hispanic American population growth was seen between 2010 and 2020.

  • The non-Hispanic Caucasian population in America went from 38.9% to 57.8% between 1980 and 2020.
  • Between 1980 and 2020, the Hispanic American population has grown from 6.4% to 18.7%.
  • The African American population has grown from 11.5% in 1980 to 12.1% in 2020.
  • The Asian American population has gone from 2.8% in 1990 to 5.9% in 2020.

The overall American population statistics show that people of color make up over half of the country’s whole youth population, with Hispanic youths at 25.7% and African American youths at 13.2%.

This population diversity is growing and expanding across the nation.

In 2020, the census showed that half of the younger population in 21 of the states and more than two-fifths of the same demographics in eight other states are people of color.

In southern states spanning from Virginia to Lousiana, African American youths account for the highest non-white share of the population.

In contrast, out West in states like New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and California alongside states in the South like Florida and Texas, the Hispanic/Latino youth population is more highly represented.

The overarching decline of the country’s youth population has changed the demographics of the same group.

As this generation ages, they will drive the main portion of growth in America’s workforce.

How Many Americans Are There by Age?

Americans

Some youth population statistics are found above in the diversity section of this article.

However, there is more to learn about the age demographics of America’s population.

The adult population grew more quickly than the under 18 crowd, according to 2020 census numbers. 77.9% of the population are adults making up 258.3 million people, which is an increase from the 234.6 million reported in 2010.

The Baby Boomers (people born between 1946 and 1964) population is partially driving the increase in the adult population, since there are so many of them due to the actual baby boom that started just after World War II.

The Northeast shows the biggest portion of this adult population at 79.7% and the South the lowest portion at 77.5% according to 2020 census statistics.

In contrast, the Northeast experienced the lowest portion of the youth population at 20.3% while the South had the highest proportion at 22.5%.

The decline in deterred youth growth in the United States population is partially due to an overarching reduction in fertility that has been increasing since 2007.

As of 2020, the adult population in the West showed the fastest growth, but the South experienced the biggest increases.

Essentially, this means that the US population is getting older, while fewer births occur.

Will the pandemic alter the course of history in the future youth population like it did during World War II? It remains to be seen.

Conclusion

We now know that in 2020 there were 331.4 million people living in America.

We also know that as of January 2022, the American population is estimated to be 332,403,650.

The states with the highest populations are no surprise with California and Texas in the lead.

States at the lower end of the population numbers are Wyoming and Vermont. Some variations that impact the populations in these states have to do with the economy, terrain, and weather.

An interesting element of the American population is that it’s becoming more and more diverse in its multicultural population.

This is also not a surprise since this country is considered the melting pot of the world.

Finally, we learned that there are more adults over 18 in America than youth under 18.

How could this affect the future of the country’s economy, workforce, future growth, and other factors?

Will the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns create more births as compared to the deaths in America? If so, the potential of experiencing a large growth spurt in the country’s population could occur, much like it did after World War II.

What does the population of your home state and city show?

Are there more older people or younger people? Do you have more people of color, or more Caucasians?

How about the fertility rates in your area? Are more babies being born in your city and state?

These are questions that arise when you read about America’s overall population statistics.

We hope that we have answered the question of how many Americans are there in 2022 for you today.
