Many people go to the hair transplant clinic thinking that they’ll be able to get their hair as thick as the image of the man or woman plastered outside.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it’s possible that’s not going to happen.

If you go for hair implants in Turkey, you should know about the different factors that affect hair transplant density.

It’ll also help you decide on the clinic that you want to go with.

If a surgeon says that they’ll restore your perfect locks in full density without even examining your scalp, get out of the clinic as fast as you can.

Just so that no one tries to fool you and you’re aware of what the surgeon’s talking about during the consultation session, you should know about the following:

Your Hair Type

Yes, it plays a role in determining the number of grafts you’ll get per square centimetre of your scalp.

It’ll also determine the number of grafts the surgeon needs to harvest from the donor area of the scalp.

You see, in a hair transplant, the surgeon takes hair grafts containing 1-5 hair strands from the back or sides of the head and puts them in the bald areas.

But it’s not that simple. If you have thick hair (in diameter), curly, or straight hair, it will impact the grafts you’ll need in a hair transplant.

If someone has thicker hair follicles/strands, their hair will look dense even with fewer grafts.

However, someone who has thin hair strands will need more hair grafts to achieve the same results as someone who has thick hair.

Similarly, people with straight hair need more grafts to achieve the same results as someone with curly hair.

Number of Hair Grafts and Hair Follicles in Each Graft

Some people are, let’s just say, genetically blessed. Typically, people have 2 hair strands in each graft, but some people have around 3-5 of them.

Those who have 2 hair follicles per graft will need 2 grafts to get the same density as someone who has 4 hair follicles in just one graft.

So, if someone is in the more “blessed” category, they can achieve high density with fewer hair grafts. About the hair grafts, if you have no hair loss issues, it should be 50-80 grafts per cm2.

The total number of grafts you have in one unit area is also important because if they’re too few, the surgeon will not harvest that many from it.

Fewer graft harvests mean not very high overall density after transplantation. Also, keep in mind, the surgeon cannot overharvest from the donor area.

Once the grafts are removed from the back and sides, no new hair will grow out of that area. So, the surgeon harvests in a way that doesn’t leave the patient with bald patches.

Hair Care

There’s nothing better than some self-love. When you shower your hair with care, it will look good. However, your hair might have something else to say, a difference in perspectives, if you will.

If you like your hair straight, that means your hair has to bear the intense heat from the hair straightener.

If you like bouncy curls, again, your hair will get the worst of it through the curling iron. All these can make your hair thinner and brittle.

You might love the fragrance of shampoo, but your scalp might not be enjoying the harsh chemicals that are in it.

The same’s the case with other hair care products, like sprays, gels, wax, and volumizers.

All these can reduce hair density. This means that when taking the hair grafts from the donor area, the surgeon will have to take more to provide better coverage.

Your Health

Being in good health matters for your hair. If you’ve lost hair due to infection, cancer, thyroid disease, or autoimmune disorder, it will mean thinner hair and lower density.

Thus, if the balding area is large and the grafts are few, the surgeon will spread them out.

Conclusion

You must have a hair transplant with realistic expectations. Not everyone can achieve high density because of biological limitations. Your doctor must discuss these things with you before the surgery.

As there are many factors at play, as discussed throughout this article.

If you’re considering a hair transplant make sure to research it thoroughly and look at recommended sources of information like Healthline.

With medical advancements happening at a rapid rate there will likely be further improvements in hair transplants over the coming years.
