The focus of this article is to answer the question, “How old is YouTube?”When social media sites were first introduced many naysayers believed it would be a fad that would fade away in time. While the creators and founders probably never imagined how wildly popular and fruitful social media networks would be, they are not a fad.

Just like all social media platforms, YouTube has its own story. We will discuss its inception, its launch, and cover data, facts, and YouTube statistics that will showcase the video-sharing platform.

Let’s start addressing the question of how old is YouTube along with other factors that relate to it.

How Old Is YouTube?

YouTube

We like to get to the point, so we will tell you that YouTube is 17 years old. It turned 17 on Valentine’s Day 2022.

The video sharing platform was launched on Valentine’s Day 2005 by Jawed Karim, Chad Hurley, and Steve Chen. YouTube is headquartered in San Bruno, California.

The founding trio once worked for PayPal and used $500,000 in PayPal to fund their venture.

The first video to be uploaded to YouTube came from one of its own founders, Jawed Karim in April 2005.

Jawed’s video is called “Me at the Zoo.” This video has been viewed more than 223 million times as of March 2022.

The number climbs every time we go to YouTube and search for it. By putting it back in the spotlight, it will probably be higher when you go look for it.

How Old Is YouTube? Did It Grow Too Fast?

The YouTube developer trio probably had no idea how quickly this platform would catch on and grow.

The beta version opened in May 2005, but the official launch occurred in December 2005.

By the time of its official grand opening, YouTube was already experiencing two million video views per day.

In January 2006, its videos achieved over 25 million views. By March 2006, over 20,000 new videos were uploaded every day.

In the summer of 2006, YouTube had over 100 million videos per day, and the uploads showed no signs of slowing.

This lightning speed growth in traffic on YouTube created some growing pains for its creators.

Just to keep up with the amount of traffic, they had to buy and add more broadband connections and more servers and computers to stay connected.

These growing pains came with expenses and with the potential for litigation since people were uploading copyrighted videos.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s purposeful or not, it’s illegal to upload copyrighted material.

Due to all these growing pains, the owners started looking for a buyer who could keep up with YouTube’s massive growth.

During this time, Google was trying to launch its own video service to no avail. So, they jumped in with a $1.65 billion bid for YouTube and won. The payout came in cash and stocks.

Google started making partnerships and monetizing the platform immediately.

They started by negotiating with some entertainment companies to mitigate the copyright issues and for more revenue and appeal.

Google was able to obtain the rights to include certain songs in their videos for the removal of tens of thousands of user uploaded videos from the platform.

Not everyone who subscribes to YouTube TV, Premium, or Music knows what went on in the background for them to be able to offer these subscription services to its users.

So, did YouTube grow too fast? For its founders, yes it did. For Google, one of the best deals was negotiated in 2006.
